Idiopathic means that there is no clear cause for the condition you are experiencing. There are not abnormalities found on MRI or CT of the brain. However, one common theory is that there is a problem with the system by which the brain makes, circulates and re-absorbs CSF.
Secondary Intercranial Hypertension: in this case a cause is known, and developing the condition is because of another condition or situation. When your doctor says this is secondary to something else, it is usually a complication of the first condition.
While there are certain factors that have been identified as possibly increasing the risk of acquiring this condition, no one really knows.
Risk Factors:
Obesity
Being a Female of childbearing age
Certain medications: Vitamin A, Corticosteroids, Oral contraceptives, Isotertinoin, Lithum, Growth Hormone, Niturfarantoin, Phenytoin, Sulfa Drugs ( minocycline, tamoxifen, naladixic acid, thyroid replacement, tetracycline, doxycycline and some chemotherapy drugs.
Medical Conditions Associated: Blockage of the venous drainage (dural sinus thrombosis), Renal (kidney) disease, prior head injury, Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, Lyme disease, acute sinusitis, measles, blood clotting disorders, anemia and malnutrition.
